Colonel Tom Parker’s Career

A short time after returning to the United States, Parker enlisted in the United States Army. He adopted the identity of the police officer who interviewed him, Tom Parker, to conceal the fact that he was here illegally. He spent two years with the 64th Coast Artillery, first at Fort Shafter in Hawaii and then at Fort Barrancas in Florida.

However, he re-enlisted and then went AWOL before being arrested for desertion. As a result, Parker was locked up in isolation. He was released but then experienced temporary mental instability due to psychosis. For this reason, the Army discharged him.

Parker rejoined the carnival industry after serving in the armed forces. Starting in 1931 and lasting until 1938, he worked as a carnie for Royal American Shows. When that was over, he became a promoter in the music industry. The first truly famous person he collaborated with was the singer Gene Austin.

Parker also served as a field agent for the Hillsborough County Humane Society during this time, raising funds and awareness for the organization’s efforts. After re-entering the music industry, he began representing artists like Eddy Arnold and Tommy Sands as a manager.

Colonel Tom Parker’s Personal Life & Death

Parker wed Marie Francis Mott in 1935, while he was still performing with the circus. Before Parker’s management career took off, the two of them worked in carnivals. In the 1960s, when Mott first showed symptoms of dementia, Parker began to withdraw from her and find solace in gambling. Mott passed away at the end of 1986, at the age of 78. Parker wed his longtime secretary, Loanne Miller, in 1990.

Parker’s last public appearance was in 1994, by which time he was sick with gout, diabetes, and other conditions. He had a stroke at the start of 1997, at the age of 87, and passed away in Las Vegas.
